Trainee of the Year

I am thrilled to be able to let you know that last Saturday night, Daniel O’Brien in Year 12 won the School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year award at the North Coast Regional Final of the Qld Training Awards. This means that Dan now goes to the finals of the Qld Training Awards in Sept, & then, fingers crossed, the Australian Training Awards. It was a very exciting & high profile night with Minister Yvette D'Ath (Attorney-General, Minister for Justice & Minister for Training  &  Skills)  presenting  the  awards.  Minister D’Ath has had  an  interesting  journey   through school, TAFE and  university to reach her current role and spoke so well about the important of training for young people and the state in general.

Daniel is currently completing his Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and plans to study a Bachelor of Medical Science followed by a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine. "This course is giving me a strong grounding and insight into health and medical industries.  I've really enjoyed my work placement in clinics at Metro North Hospital and Health Service. It's going to give me a head start when I start my studies." Dan also acknowledged the St Columban's College and the support he's received "the careers team here at school have been so supportive in helping me get as much experience as possible before I leave school."

I would like to especially thank Kate Ruddy, Sherryl Gregory, Linda Upton, Kym Smart & Lyndel Russell in the VET & Careers team for their support of Dan in this application.
